Plumber call booking rate is the share of inbound calls a plumbing shop turns into a scheduled job, and ServiceTitan's June 2022 platform data put plumbing at 43%, the highest of the trades it reported. The same data set says the rate collapses at night, which is when plumbing calls arrive.
That second finding is the one nobody quotes. Across the trade businesses in that June 2022 data, mornings booked best, and after 6 p.m. a small shop's rate ran about 9% against a peak near 26%. For a plumbing company, that is not a footnote about scheduling. It is the shape of the emergency call itself.
What a plumbing shop's booking rate actually is
A plumbing shop's booking rate is the share of inbound calls that end up on the schedule. The published benchmark comes from ServiceTitan's own platform - more than 3,000 trade businesses across the United States and Canada, measured in June 2022 - where plumbing booked 43% of its calls that month against 42% across all trades.
Shop size moves the number far more than trade does. Businesses with fewer than five technicians booked 24% of calls; businesses with 25 or more booked 59%. Two honest caveats: this is vendor data from companies sophisticated enough to run ServiceTitan, not an industry census, and the report does not define which calls enter the denominator. Treat 43% as directional, and your own log as the real number.
| Cut of the data | Call booking rate | What it says to a plumbing shop |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbing, June 2022 | 43% | Best of the four trades reported, and still fewer than half the calls |
| All trades average | 42% | The category baseline that month; electrical 41%, HVAC 38% |
| Fewer than five technicians | 24% | Roughly one call in four, when the people answering are also on jobs |
| 25 or more technicians | 59% | Dedicated call handling, not better plumbing |
| Small shops, peak hour | 26% | Mornings had the highest booking rates |
| Small shops, after 6 p.m. | 9% | About one call in eleven, in the window emergencies arrive |
| Large shops, peak to after 6 p.m. | 61% to 21% | Even staffed shops fall away at night |
The hour that books worst is the hour plumbing calls arrive
Booking rates move with the clock, and the drop is steep. Mornings booked best. After 6 p.m., shops with 25 or more technicians fell to about 21% from a peak near 61%, and shops with fewer than five fell to about 9% from a peak near 26% - roughly one evening call in eleven.
HVAC has seasons; plumbing has hours. The failure that makes somebody dial a plumber - a line backing up into a bathroom in Matthews, a water heater that let go in a Plaza Midwood basement - does not wait for business hours, and the caller is standing in it. On that call, "we'll get back to you tomorrow" and "call someone else" are the same sentence, and it lands in the window every size of shop books worst.
What Google does with the call nobody answered
Google prices call handling directly in the one channel plumbers advertise in by the lead. Local Services Ads are ordered by an auction, and as of September 2026 Google's help page lists responsiveness to customer inquiries among the factors, adding that missed calls may negatively affect it. Plumbers are one of the eligible Local Services categories.
The more useful line on that page is about the alternative. Google writes: "Enabling message and/or booking leads means there are more ways for customers to reach you, which can increase the likelihood of receiving a lead, especially during nights and weekends when you can't answer the phone." That is Google describing the 6 p.m. problem in its own documentation, and naming a mechanism rather than a staffing plan.
Hours you can keep, and hours you cannot
Publishing 24-hour availability you cannot staff is the wrong fix, on two counts. Google confirmed in December 2023 that it uses openness in its local ranking systems, but BrightLocal's study of 50 locations found service-area businesses set to "open 24 hours" showed no ranking fluctuation - and BrightLocal advises against listing hours that are not true and accurate.
So the after-hours answer is not a hours field edited optimistically. It is a path to the schedule that exists whether or not a human is awake: a text back within seconds of the missed call, booking and message options enabled on the profile and the ad, and hours that match who is genuinely reachable. A customer who gets a slot at 9:40 p.m. does not care that a person did not pick up.
Booking against real capacity, and the quote nobody chased
Answering is half the job. The other half is what the answer can promise: a slot that exists on a real schedule, confirmed automatically, and an estimate followed up on day three rather than when somebody remembers. A shop that books work it cannot staff has moved the leak rather than closed it.
Before buying anything, split last month's unbooked calls by cause: never answered, answered but not booked, booked then cancelled, quoted then never chased. The ServiceTitan report does not split them and your phone log can. Only the first bucket is fixed by somebody picking up faster, and it is rarely the biggest one.
What this looks like when it runs
Running, this is one system instead of four purchases. The ad and the Business Profile bring the call; a missed-call text-back answers within seconds with a way to book; online booking offers slots calculated from real availability and confirms them; the estimate gets chased on a schedule; and one screen shows calls, booked jobs and which channel produced each.
Mirastart builds and runs those systems for Charlotte businesses. The online booking and repair-status software Quick Auto NC runs its bays on is ours; the website for Carolina Sky Painting, a Charlotte home-services contractor, is ours; and the booking system behind this site's own discovery-call page calculates genuine availability and confirms automatically. Those are the same mechanics a plumbing shop needs at 9 p.m.
