Google Ads vs Local Services Ads for HVAC in Charlotte (2026)

Perry Lam · FounderPublished

Google Ads and Local Services Ads are two ways to buy the same Charlotte HVAC search, and they bill differently: Local Services Ads charge per lead, run without keywords, and rank partly on how you handle the phone, while Google Ads charge per click and rank on bid, ad and landing page quality, and the searcher's context.

Every Google fact below comes from Google's own help pages as of September 2026, and the booking-rate figures are ServiceTitan's published platform data from June 2022. Neither publishes a Charlotte HVAC lead price, so no number here pretends to be one.

What each channel charges you for

Local Services Ads charge for a valid lead: an answered call, a voicemail, a message or a booking request. Google Ads charge for a click, whether or not the visitor ever calls. The unit changes what a wasted interaction costs you, and each channel wastes money in a different place.

On Local Services Ads you pay for the price shopper who calls and for the after-hours contact you could not take; Google lists both among the leads it will not credit. On Google Ads you pay for the visitor who reads your replacement page and closes the tab.

The screening wait decides what you can turn on this month

Local Services Ads cannot be switched on this week. Google's screening page says the process takes three to four weeks on average after documents are submitted, and HVAC is an urgent category that adds background checks on the service professionals who enter homes. Google Ads can run tomorrow.

That gap is the whole answer for a shop that needs calls before the next heat wave. As of September 2026 a Local Services advertiser also needs a public, verified Google Business Profile, business registration, general and professional liability insurance, and state-level license checks for the business and the owner.

So the order of operations is usually decided for you: start the screening now and run search ads in the meantime. A shop that begins enrolment in June is paying full price for a season it has already missed.

Which jobs each channel is good at buying

Google Ads buys a specific job. Local Services Ads buy whatever the category sends. Keywords and negative keyword lists let you bid on heat pump replacement and exclude filter prices, DIY questions and job seekers. Local Services Ads stay keywordless, targeted by the service categories and areas you offer.

Google's documentation describes a negative keyword as one that prevents an ad being triggered by a given word or phrase, with broad, phrase and exact match types deciding how tightly it blocks. A dual-fuel replacement and an aux-heat diagnostic are one category to Local Services Ads and two separate campaigns in Google Ads.

The reverse case is just as real. A homeowner searching at 6am with no cool air is not comparing landing pages, and the Local Services unit sits above the map results with a phone number and a rating on it. Emergency demand is where paying per lead earns its premium.

What the August 2026 migration changed about the choice

Local Services Ads moved into Google Ads in August 2026, HVAC in the first phase, as a Performance Max campaign type with pay-per-lead goals. The choice is now between two campaign types in one advertising account rather than two products in two dashboards.

Google's Ads Help page on the transition states it directly: "While the platform you use to manage your advertising is changing, where and how your ads appear to local customers on Google Search and Google Maps remains exactly the same." The pay-per-lead model and the keywordless targeting both survive the move, as of September 2026.

  • Weekly budgets become a daily average, divided by seven from your historical weekly figure.
  • Manual bidding and industry-level Target CPA are being deprecated, so the direct lever over lead price is going away.
  • Local Services Ads performance reports do not transition, so export anything you want to keep before the account moves.
  • New pay-per-lead campaigns still cannot be created inside Google Ads; Google directs advertisers back to its Local Services site for that.

For a shop choosing today the practical effect is smaller than it sounds. Google's published plan as of September 2026 runs into late 2026 and 2027 for the remaining groups, so a Charlotte HVAC account is in the first wave and the later dates are a plan, not a completed fact.

Price the choice in booked jobs, not in leads

Cost per lead and cost per click are the wrong unit for this decision. Divide either by your booking rate to get the cost of a job that reaches the schedule. ServiceTitan's June 2022 platform data across more than 3,000 trade businesses put HVAC at 38% of inbound calls booked, and shops under five technicians at 24%.

Two effects follow, and they point in opposite directions. A pay-per-lead charge is wasted only when the lead does not book, so a shop booking 24% wastes roughly three of every four charges. A pay-per-click charge is wasted earlier, on every visitor who never picks up the phone.

Seasonality moves the same arithmetic. ServiceTitan's report found HVAC booking rates higher in shoulder seasons and lower in summer, so the month with the most demand is the month each lead converts worst. Peak season is the most expensive version of this decision on either channel.

What this looks like when it runs

Do you run Local Services Ads, and when does enrolment start? That is the first of the six questions on our HVAC page, and the honest answer is a date rather than a season. We enrol the account, run the ads, dispute the leads that are not leads, and start the screening ahead of the season, not inside it.

The rest is the machinery that decides whether either channel was worth buying: missed-call text-back within seconds with a booking link, instant response to web inquiries with real availability, a handoff to a person for anything needing judgment, unbooked quotes chased on a schedule, and one monthly report in calls, booked jobs and the channel behind each. A channel that stops producing gets cut, ours included, and every account stays in your name.

Questions

Google ads vs local services ads HVAC, answered.

Can I run Google Ads and Local Services Ads at the same time?

Yes, and most shops eventually do. As of September 2026 they are two campaign types rather than two products: Local Services Ads migrated into Google Ads in August 2026 as a Performance Max campaign with pay-per-lead goals, though Google still sends advertisers back to its Local Services site to create new ones. Run search ads while screening is pending, then split by what each is booking rather than by what each costs per lead.

Which is cheaper for an HVAC company, Google Ads or Local Services Ads?

Neither publishes a Charlotte price, and cheaper per lead is not the same as cheaper per booked job. Google recalculates Ad Rank on every search, and Local Services runs an auction against the shops in your service area, so the number is set by who else is bidding that day. Divide whatever you pay by your booking rate before comparing: at the 24% ServiceTitan reports for shops under five technicians, you are paying for about four leads per booked job.

We are a two-truck shop. Should we just pick one?

Start with the answering path, then pick the one you can actually run. Screening averages three to four weeks, so search ads are usually what a small shop can turn on now, aimed at the replacement and maintenance searches worth a truck roll. Local Services Ads make more sense once somebody, or something, answers at 9pm, because Google's ad rankings page says missed calls may negatively affect responsiveness.
