The Google Business Profile Setup for Charlotte HVAC Companies

Perry Lam · FounderPublished Updated

A Google Business Profile decides which Charlotte HVAC company a homeowner calls when the heat pump quits, because the map results sit above the website links. Google ranks those results on relevance, distance and prominence, and the profile is the only one of the three a contractor can edit directly.

Every Google rule below comes from Google's Business Profile help pages as of September 2026, and the ranking weightings from Whitespark's 2026 survey. Where a widely repeated tactic has been measured and did not hold up, this says so.

Start with the primary category, not the description

The primary category is the highest-weighted local pack ranking factor in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, in which 47 local search practitioners scored 187 factors. For most Charlotte shops the correct primary is HVAC contractor, with heating contractor and air conditioning contractor added as secondary categories.

Google allows one primary category and up to nine additional ones, and that ceiling is not a target. Each extra category widens eligibility while blurring what the profile is understood to be. Categories describe what the business is, not every job it will accept.

The category names are Google's, and the list still reads like a gas-belt vocabulary - furnace repair service sits in the picker, nothing says aux heat or dual fuel. Take the closest names Google offers and do the heat-pump work in the Services section, where custom entries are allowed.

Hide the address, and draw the service area honestly

An HVAC company that goes to the customer is a service-area business, and Google requires service-area businesses to hide the street address rather than display it. Leaving a home or shop address visible on a profile with no walk-in customers is among the most common reasons profiles get suspended.

Hiding the address does not mean Google stops using it. A verified address still sits behind the listing and distance is measured from it, which is why proximity is the factor no edit can fix. Google's guidance is that the overall service area should not extend much beyond about two hours' driving from where the business is based, across up to 20 service areas.

For a Charlotte shop that means the towns you actually dispatch to - Matthews, Huntersville, Concord, Fort Mill - not every county within two hours. Service areas describe coverage; they do not create ranking in those towns. The suburb-page version of the same wish is the doorway pattern Google's spam policies name outright.

Hours: “open 24 hours” is not the free win it looks like

Being open at the time of the search is a top-five local pack factor in the Whitespark survey, which is why nearly every HVAC marketing guide tells shops to set the profile to open 24 hours. BrightLocal's study of opening hours and local rankings measured that specific case and did not find the lift.

In BrightLocal's published research, reports run during a business's opening hours showed higher local rankings on average, but service-area businesses set to open 24 hours - electricians and HVAC contractors among them - did not show the same fluctuation, and setting hours to 24 hours did not by itself produce higher rankings. The honest reading is that openness matters and that claiming permanent openness is not how you buy it.

The second cost shows up in the schedule rather than the rankings. A shop listed open 24 hours whose 9pm July call goes to voicemail has bought a one-star review and a caller already dialling the next result. Set hours to when someone answers, and add emergency hours only if you staff them.

Write the Services section in heat-pump language

The Services section is where a Charlotte HVAC profile earns relevance for the searches that actually convert. Google offers suggested services by category and lets a business add custom ones, and those entries can surface on the profile when someone searches for a service the business provides. Most contractor profiles leave the section nearly empty.

North Carolina is a heat-pump state - EIA's 2020 residential energy survey puts a central heat pump as the main heating equipment in about 38% of homes here - so a services list written around furnaces describes a market that is not here. Enter what homeowners search and technicians do: heat pump repair and replacement, aux heat and defrost diagnostics, dual-fuel service, mini-splits, duct sealing, maintenance agreements.

Each service takes a short description. Write those the way a homeowner asks the question, not the way a distributor writes a spec sheet, and reuse the same text on the website's service pages - the profile and the site agreeing is itself a relevance signal.

The business name field is where profiles get suspended

Google's guidelines say the profile name should be the real-world business name used on the storefront, website and stationery, and that including unnecessary information in it is not permitted and can result in suspension. Appending service and city keywords is the most tempting edit on the profile and the likeliest to cost the listing.

The distinction is ownership, not keywords. A registered name that genuinely contains a service word or a place name is fine as it stands; bolting on the terms you wish you ranked for is not. A suspension takes the reviews and the ranking offline while it is being argued.

Photos, reviews, and the Ask button that replaced Q&A

Reviews feed prominence, the third of Google's three local ranking inputs, and they are the part of the profile a contractor moves most directly through ordinary work. Photos do the rest of the persuading: trucks, crews, real installs and the equipment you carry, not manufacturer stock images.

The questions-and-answers section local marketers used to seed is gone. Google retired Business Profile Q&A and replaced it with an AI-backed Ask experience in Maps that composes answers in real time. As of September 2026 that means the profile, the reviews and the website answer the question instead of a pre-written pair - which makes the Services text load-bearing in a way a seeded question never was.

One thing the profile cannot do is be bought. Google states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking - worth remembering when a cold email offers exactly that. Paid placement next to the map results is Local Services Ads, a separate product with its own screening.

The 60-minute pass, in order

Most Charlotte HVAC profiles can be brought to a defensible state in about an hour, and the order matters: the first two items change what you are eligible for, the rest change whether the click becomes a call. Work top to bottom, one change at a time, so a movement can be attributed.

  1. 1Set the primary category to the work you want more of; cut the additional ones back to three or four.
  2. 2Confirm the address is hidden and the service areas are the towns you actually dispatch to.
  3. 3Set hours to when a human answers; add emergency hours only if the on-call rotation is real.
  4. 4Fill Services with heat-pump vocabulary, custom entries included, each with a plain-language description.
  5. 5Check the business name against the registered name and strip what was added for search.
  6. 6Replace stock photography with your own trucks, crews and installs.
  7. 7Move the review ask into the job close, where the technician already is, and answer every review.

Questions

Straight answers.

What primary category should a Charlotte HVAC company use?

HVAC contractor is the right primary for a shop that installs and services residential heating and cooling. Add heating contractor and air conditioning contractor as secondary categories, and stop at three or four. Google allows nine additional categories, but each one widens the searches the profile is eligible for and blurs what it is understood to be. The primary is the highest-weighted local pack factor in Whitespark's 2026 survey, so it is worth getting right before anything else on the profile.

Should an HVAC profile be set to open 24 hours?

Only if someone answers at 2am. Being open at the time of a search is a top-five local ranking factor, but BrightLocal's research on opening hours found that service-area businesses set to open 24 hours did not show the same ranking movement, and that setting hours to 24 hours did not itself produce higher rankings. Hours are also a promise: a listed-open profile that goes to voicemail during a July outage trades a ranking theory for a one-star review.

Does a Google Business Profile still matter if we run Local Services Ads?

Yes, and more than before. The profile drives the free map results, which Google says cannot be paid for, and after the August 2026 move of Local Services Ads into Google Ads the campaign is pre-populated from the Business Profile, with name, address and hours syncing from the profile to the ads. A weak profile now weakens both the organic result and the paid one.
