How HVAC Companies Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Answers

Perry Lam · FounderPublished

HVAC companies get recommended by ChatGPT when the sources it can retrieve describe them consistently: a claimed and complete Google Business Profile, review profiles on third-party platforms, and pages a crawler is allowed to read. Google's AI answers work differently from ChatGPT's, and an HVAC shop needs both, which is the part most advice skips.

Where an AI answer gets its HVAC names

Review and trust profiles are where a large share of them come from. Seer Interactive analyzed 804,491 AI responses across 1,926 brands on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity in March 2026, with Home Services among its eight verticals, and found review and trust sites to be the second-highest citation source at 14.01% of citations overall.

The share rose the closer a prompt got to hiring. At what the researchers called the intent stage, the question a homeowner asks when they are ready to call somebody, review and trust sites carried 24.27% of citations. The headline finding was starker: brands with no Trustpilot profile had a median AI citation rate of 1%, and brands with as few as 1 to 13 reviews sat at 53.5%.

Two caveats. The study was conducted for Trustpilot and measures Trustpilot profiles specifically, so it is not a finding about Google reviews, and the authors call the result correlational. The direction survives both: Seer recorded ChatGPT naming a missing review presence as evidence of lower trustworthiness. An absent third-party profile is not neutral.

What Google says about optimizing for its AI answers

Google says there is no separate optimization to do. Its Search Central guide to generative AI features puts it in one line: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Nothing beyond that is required.

The same guide, last updated July 2026 and unchanged as of September 2026, disposes of most of what gets sold as AI optimization. Google states that it does not use llms.txt files or other special markup, that adding them will neither harm nor help visibility because Search ignores them, that there is no requirement to chunk content into small pieces, and that no special schema.org markup is needed. Structured data stays worth doing for rich results, which is a different job.

That is one engine speaking for itself. Google's guide says nothing about ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude, and those engines publish their own rules.

The one line that can take an HVAC site out of ChatGPT's answers

A single robots.txt directive decides it. OpenAI's crawler documentation states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that a robots.txt change takes roughly 24 hours to register. Anthropic and Perplexity publish the same kind of per-agent control, each with a separately named bot and a separate consequence.

Search-facing agents and what blocking each one does, from each engine's own documentation, as of September 2026
EngineSearch-facing agentWhat the documentation says blocking it does
OpenAIOAI-SearchBotOpted-out sites will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links
AnthropicClaude-SearchBotPrevents indexing for search, which Anthropic says may reduce visibility and accuracy in user search results
AnthropicClaude-UserPrevents retrieval in response to a user question, which may reduce visibility for user-directed web search
PerplexityPerplexityBotPerplexity recommends allowing it, and permitting its published IP ranges, so a site appears in search results
GoogleGooglebotGoogle says robots.txt for Googlebot is the control for AI features in Search, alongside nosnippet and noindex

Worth checking first: a web application firewall can block these agents without anybody deciding to. Perplexity's documentation says a site behind a firewall may need to whitelist its bots. A contractor site on a host with aggressive bot filtering can be invisible to every engine here while its robots.txt says nothing at all.

Three actions that move an HVAC shop into those answers

Three things carry the weight, and all three are local-search work rather than AI work. Claim and complete the Business Profile, build a real third-party review presence, and make sure the pages answer early and can actually be fetched. None of them requires a new file, a new schema type or a vendor with an AI product.

  1. 1Claim and complete the Google Business Profile. Google's own guidance says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up, and that review count and rating feed prominence. A public, verified profile is also a requirement to advertise with Local Services Ads, so the same record does double duty.
  2. 2Build review presence where third parties can see it, asked for the same way every time. The uniform ask at a fixed milestone, never gated by who seemed happy and never incentivized, is both the compliant pattern and the one that produces a profile an engine can read.
  3. 3Write pages that answer in the first hundred words and let the crawlers read them. Surfer's analysis of 100,000 citation placements across 10,000 AI Overviews responses, collected June 2026, found 38% of citations came from a page's first 100 words, and that pages confirming and answering the query early were cited 45% of the time against 23% for pages that did not. Surfer sells a product built on that finding and calls the data correlational.

What is measurable here, and what is not

There is no rank to report for an AI answer, and no clean traffic number either. Google states that sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside overall Search traffic in Search Console, reported under the Web search type. AI answer visits are not separable from ordinary search visits there, so anybody promising a clean AI report is describing something the platform does not publish.

Keep the scale honest while planning against it. Sterling Sky, reporting its own client and rank-tracking data in June 2026, put ChatGPT referral traffic for one large multi-location client at about 2% of that client's Google traffic, up from 0.1% a year earlier. Over the same period its tracking showed AI-powered local packs on roughly 7% of tracked mobile US keywords, featuring one or two businesses instead of three and carrying no call buttons.

Those are one agency's numbers from one keyword set, not an industry measurement. Read as a trend rather than a benchmark, they argue for doing the reputation work now and against moving a budget off search to chase it.

What this looks like when it runs, and whose name is on the Business Profile

Whose name is on the Business Profile is the first question here, because the profile is the record these engines read. Mirastart builds the profile, the review request and the reporting in the shop's own name, so the account, the reviews and the data stay with the shop if the engagement ends.

The mechanics are unglamorous and continuous. The review request fires at the same milestone on every completed job rather than when somebody remembers, listings are written once and pushed identically everywhere so the engines read one consistent description, and pages answer one question each in their opening paragraph.

Those systems are built and running in Charlotte and they are clickable: the website for Carolina Sky Painting, a Charlotte home-services contractor, the online booking and repair-status software Quick Auto NC runs its bays on, the live-availability booking system behind this site's own discovery-call page, and the Sushi Hana Club app in the App Store. Same mechanics a heat pump shop needs, wired to the records a job already produces.

Questions

How HVAC companies get recommended by chatgpt, answered.

Do we need to add an llms.txt file or special AI schema to our website?

Not for Google. Its Search Central guide to generative AI features states that you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in Google Search including its generative AI capabilities, that Search ignores them, and that there is no special schema.org markup required. That guidance covers Google only and says nothing about other engines, but no engine publishes a requirement for one either. Ordinary structured data is still worth keeping for rich results.

Will ranking first on Google put us in ChatGPT's answer?

Partly, and less than you would expect. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in core Search ranking by Google's own description, so a page that ranks is eligible there. ChatGPT is a separate system that retrieves through its own agent and leans on third-party sources, which is why Seer found review and trust sites the second-highest citation source across 804,491 responses. Ranking helps. It does not transfer automatically.

How do we tell whether any of this is working?

Not by a rank, because AI answers do not have one and their outputs vary between runs. Two things are readable. Ask the engines the questions a homeowner would ask and record what they cite and whether you are named, as observation rather than a score. Then watch the inputs you control: profile completeness, review count and recency, and whether your pages are fetchable by the agents above. Google reports AI-feature clicks inside ordinary Search data, so there is no separate traffic line to chart.
