Heat pump content is the set of pages a Charlotte HVAC company publishes to answer what homeowners ask about a heat pump: aux heat, defrost, replace or repair, and the SEER2 number on the quote. The questions are specific to this equipment, and most HVAC content templates answer furnace questions instead.
The equipment figures below come from the US Energy Information Administration's 2020 residential energy survey, the rating facts from AHRI, the backup-heat guidance from the Department of Energy's Energy Saver pages, and the content rules from Google's own documentation.
What North Carolina's heat-pump share actually is
North Carolina had 4.01 million occupied homes in EIA's 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey, and a central heat pump was the main heating equipment in 1.54 million of them, about 38%. Nationally the figure was 13%. A furnace was still main equipment in about half of NC homes, so the honest claim is share, not absence.
That 38% is the third-highest share among states with reported data in the same table, behind South Carolina at 41% and Alabama at 39%. EIA cautions that differences between states may not be statistically significant, and the survey year is 2020, so treat it as a strong signal about this market rather than a live count.
Two things follow for a content plan. A shop here writes for both kinds of home, and the questions with no good local answer are nearly all on the heat-pump side, because the content libraries competitors buy from were written in the furnace belt. Aux heat is the homeowner's term, and almost nobody publishes a Charlotte answer for it.
The questions a heat-pump homeowner actually types
Five questions carry most of the search volume a Charlotte shop can win, and each one is a different decision at a different hour: is this broken tonight, is my bill normal, do I repair or replace, is this quote worse than the last one, and who is coming out now. The page type follows the decision, not the keyword.

Only one of the five is an emergency. The other four are researched days or weeks before any money moves, which is the window content wins and an ad cannot buy.
Aux heat is where the trust is won or lost
Auxiliary heat, the electric resistance strips that supplement a heat pump when it cannot meet the load, produces more confused calls in a Charlotte January than any other part of the system. The Department of Energy's Energy Saver guidance says backup systems such as electric resistance or strip heaters are usually more expensive to operate because they are less efficient.
The same guidance advises against setting back a heat pump's thermostat when doing so brings the backup heat on, because the setback can cancel out the saving it was meant to produce. That is a homeowner behaviour question wearing an equipment costume, and it is the answer a technician gives at the kitchen table three times a week.
So the page is not a definition of auxiliary heat. It answers the call: when the strips are supposed to run, the bill that follows a cold snap, the thermostat habit that runs them for nothing, and how to tell all that apart from a system that is failing. Write it from a recorded conversation with a senior tech, not from a template.
SEER2 changed the number on the quote and nobody told the homeowner
SEER2 is the cooling efficiency rating produced by the Department of Energy's M1 test procedure, and according to AHRI, the association that publishes the rating standard, the metrics became SEER2, EER2 and HSPF2 in January 2023 because the test procedure changed substantially. A SEER2 figure reads lower than the old SEER figure for the same equipment.
AHRI's comparison makes the gap concrete: the split-system heat pump minimum moved from 14.0 SEER to 14.3 SEER2, which it equates to 15 SEER. As of September 2026 that is still the scale on every quote, so a homeowner holding a 2026 proposal against a 2019 one is reading two rulers and concluding that efficiency went backwards.
One page fixes it, and it belongs wherever quotes are sent rather than on the blog alone: two scales, why they differ, and what the rating does not tell them, which is how the system performs in an NC winter rather than a test lab.
Why the commodity version of this content never gets cited
Because anybody could have written it. Google's own guidance for generative AI features draws exactly this line, contrasting content based on common knowledge that adds little unique insight with content carrying a first-hand expert take. Ten identical heat-pump explainers give a search engine no reason to prefer the eleventh.
Google's AI-optimization documentation puts the priority in one sentence: "Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide." The same page warns that spinning out separate content for every variation of how people might search, done to move rankings, violates the scaled content abuse policy.
Placement then decides whether the good answer gets used. Surfer's analysis of 100,000 AI Overviews citation placements, collected in June 2026, found 38% of citations pulled from a page's first 100 words, and that pages confirming and answering the query early were cited 45% against 23%. So the answer goes in the first paragraph, in the homeowner's words, and the elaboration follows it.
What this looks like when it runs
When does the seasonal content go live is the question to ask, and for heat-pump content the answer is August for heating and February or March for cooling. A page published inside the season has already missed it. Each page is built once, refreshed annually before its window, and the profile services text is written to match it.
