The Google Business Profile for a Charlotte Restaurant, Field by Field

Perry Lam · FounderPublished

A Charlotte restaurant's Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears when someone nearby searches for a cuisine, a dish or a table tonight, and it carries fields most business types never see: a menu editor, order links with a preferred provider, a reservation button, dining attributes and special hours. Google says local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence; the profile is the relevance half.

Every Google rule below comes from Google's Business Profile help pages and its restaurant page, read in October 2026. The Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counts 2,460 restaurants with paid employees in Mecklenburg County, so a half-filled profile competes with thousands for the same hungry search.

The primary category is the cuisine, not "Restaurant"

The primary category should be the specific cuisine, because Google says the primary category affects local ranking and that a specific category can show for broader searches too. Its example is a Pizza restaurant, which may appear in searches for Restaurants, Italian Restaurants or Pizza. A profile set to the generic Restaurant category answers none of the cuisine searches well.

Additional categories are for genuine departments, and Google's instruction is to use a few, not one per product; its example is a grocery store adding Bakery and Deli. A Sushi restaurant with a real bar might add Bar; it does not add Lunch restaurant because it sounds like a search. Google also says restaurants get category-specific features: the menu editor, order links and reservation button follow from a food and drink category.

Google's menu editor lets a food and drink business add menu sections, items, descriptions and prices directly on the profile, and the separate Menu link field holds a URL. The items are what Google matches to a dish search; the link is where a guest reads the full menu. Google says menu changes can take one to two days to show.

The menu link should open a page of real text on your own website, not a PDF or a photo. Google says it may transcribe menu data from your website onto the profile, and a text menu is one that transcription, a search engine and an AI assistant can read. Google's experimental Generate a menu feature reads a photo or PDF, with its own advice to review the result before publishing.

Where each restaurant field lives on the profile and what Google's help pages say it does, read October 2026.

Point the order button and the reservation button at your own systems

Order with Google lets a restaurant accept pickup and delivery orders from its profile through third-party providers or links it adds itself, and one can be marked preferred: open Food ordering, select a provider or link, choose Set as preferred, and switch Preferred for pickup or Preferred for delivery on. A custom link to your own ordering page is allowed, and a provider must remove its link within 5 business days of your request.

The reason to care is the guest who searched for you by name: if the order button sends them to a delivery app, commission is paid on an order already won. Preferred keeps that order direct while the apps stay listed, and Accept orders on your profile can be turned off at a restaurant without takeout.

Reservations work the same way. The Bookings section connects a provider, and the Reserve with Google partner page as of October 2026 lists OpenTable, Resy, Tock, SevenRooms, Toast Tables, Yelp and DoorDash Reservations among others. Google says providers appear within a week, warns that a provider may charge for bookings made through Google, and allows your own link instead. Guests can book a table or join a waitlist, so a planned dinner no longer ends at a phone nobody answers at 7pm.

Attributes are filters, and special hours are promises

Attributes are the yes or no facts on the profile, and each one left blank is a filter the restaurant drops out of. Google describes them as answered Yes or No under Edit profile and More, names Wi-Fi, outdoor seats and cash-only as examples, and lists the accessibility set. Some, Google says, may be populated from customers who visit, so the subjective ones are earned rather than typed.

Google's restaurant page lists dining and delivery options as basic profile facts, so dine-in, takeout and delivery are each set to what is true. Special hours are the field a restaurant forgets. Google says they cover holidays, special events and other exceptional circumstances, show only on the designated days, and cannot exceed 24 hours in one entry, so a New Year's Eve service ending at 1am is two dates. Confirm official holidays even when hours are unchanged, Google advises. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and every private buyout go in ahead; a brunch service with its own hours uses More hours.

Photos, offers and reviews: what you control and what Google does

Photos split into two kinds. The restaurant's own photos of the room and the dishes carry the profile, and Google says a user-submitted photo may be shown instead if the cover photo is low quality, and an owner cannot delete guest photos, only request their removal. A dish that left the menu but stayed on the profile is one a guest will ask for.

Posts come as Update, Offer and Event, and Offers are the restaurant tool: a title, dates and a time are required, a coupon code, link and terms optional, with a View Offer button added. Posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set, so a monthly promotion calendar is also a posting calendar, and Google says some deal or event posts may be featured automatically on mobile profiles for single-location food and drink businesses.

Reviews run on two Google rules that get confused. Asking is allowed: Google's tips page says a business can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code, and recommends replying to every one. Paying is not: the same page calls free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews strictly prohibited, and Google's contribution policy adds no selective solicitation of positive reviews and no pressuring guests on the premises. A free dessert for five stars is a removable review; a QR card on every check is fine, and replies should not offer deals.

Q&A has changed, so stop building on it

The Q&A section that let a restaurant seed its own questions is no longer a field to plan around. Google discontinued the My Business Q&A API on November 3, 2025, and BrightLocal's guide, updated April 2026, reports that Google has discontinued Q&A and is replacing it with Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered feature that answers from the Business Profile, reviews, the website and third-party sources. Check your own listing for leftover questions. Parking, reservations and the patio are now answered by attributes, the booking button and a text menu.

What this looks like when it runs

Running, the profile is the storefront of one system: the order button lands on the restaurant's own ordering, the reservation button books a real table, a missed call at the rush gets a text back carrying both links, the review ask goes out with every order, the promotion calendar is posted as Offers, and one report shows orders, reservations and calls by channel, direct and app counted apart.

Mirastart builds and runs those systems for Charlotte restaurants. Sushi Hana, in Ballantyne and South End, runs the QR table ordering and Sushi Hana Club loyalty app we built, and we run its marketing; Anju, the modern Korean restaurant on East Woodlawn Road, runs on the website we built with its menu as text, and we run its Google Ads. Both are public: the app is in the App Store and both listings are on Google. Our Charlotte restaurant marketing page and our disclosed list of Charlotte restaurant marketing agencies, linked below, show where the profile sits in the plan.

Questions

Restaurant Google business profile Charlotte, answered.

What primary category should a Charlotte restaurant use on Google?

The specific cuisine. Google says the primary category affects local ranking, and its example is that a Pizza restaurant may appear in searches for Restaurants, Italian Restaurants or Pizza, so a Korean restaurant or Sushi restaurant category covers the generic search as well. Use a few additional categories for real departments, like a bar, not for every service; the menu editor, order links and reservation button come with a food and drink category.

Can a restaurant offer a free dessert or discount for a Google review?

No. Google's tips page says offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for customers posting reviews is strictly prohibited and counts as fake and misleading content, and the contribution policy says incentivised reviews are removed. Asking is allowed: Google says a business can ask customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code to leave a review. Ask every table the same way, never selectively, and do not pressure guests to post while they are at the table.

Does Google Business Profile Q&A still exist for restaurants in 2026?

Not as a field to plan around. Google discontinued the My Business Q&A API on November 3, 2025, and BrightLocal's guide updated in April 2026 reports Google has discontinued Q&A and is replacing it with Ask Maps, which answers from the profile, reviews, the website and third-party sources. Some listings may still show old questions, so check your own. Parking, reservations and the patio are now answered by attributes, the reservation button and a text menu and FAQ on your site.
