Charlotte plumbing marketing, measured in booked jobs, not in calls
Charlotte plumbing marketing is the work of turning emergency and planned plumbing demand into booked jobs: Local Services Ads, a phone answered after 6 p.m., and quote follow-up. Mecklenburg County has about 300 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments by the Census Bureau's 2023 count. Mirastart runs that marketing from Charlotte and builds the booking and follow-up systems behind it.
Search for plumbing marketing in Charlotte and the first page is a radio group's industry page with no prices, no FAQs and no sourced statistics on it, a national firm with a Charlotte address and a single named case study, and a plan-pricing page that sells the same package to landscapers. None of them say what a plumbing call looks like at 9 p.m., which is the whole business.
What to look for in a plumbing marketing agency, and how to check it
A plumbing marketing agency should be judged on six things a reader can check: how it handles the after-hours call, whether it runs Local Services Ads, what unit its reports are in, who owns the accounts, how the fee is structured, and whether it knows the state board's rules. Each row is the question, the check, and what Mirastart does.
| What to look for | What to ask | How to verify the answer | What Mirastart does |
|---|---|---|---|
| The after-hours call | What happens to a burst-pipe call at 9 p.m. on a Sunday? | Call the agency's own number after hours. Then ask what their system does for your number at minute two. | Missed-call text-back within seconds with a booking link, an answered line for emergencies, and a follow-up sequence until the caller books or says no. |
| Local Services Ads | Do you run Local Services Ads, and when does the screening start? | Google's screening covers a business and owner background check, general liability insurance and the state license where local law requires one. Ask for the submission date in writing. | We enrol the account, submit the documents, run the ads, and dispute leads that are not leads. Enrolment starts the week you sign, not the week the first freeze hits. |
| Reporting in booked jobs | What unit is the monthly report in? | Ask to see a real report for a plumbing client. Clicks, impressions and even calls are activity. A drain clearing and a repipe are not the same lead. | One report: calls, booked jobs, average ticket and which channel produced each. A channel that stops producing gets cut, including ours. |
| Account and data ownership | Whose name is on the Business Profile, the ad accounts and the phone number? | Open the Business Profile and check the primary owner. Ask what happens to each account and the tracking number the day you leave. | Everything stays in your name: the profile, the ad accounts, the number, the CRM and the booking data. The whole system is portable. |
| How the fee is structured | Is the fee flat, and is there a lock-in? | Ask what the fee does when you double ad spend, and what is owed if you leave in month three. | A flat monthly retainer from $3,000, never a percentage of ad spend. Month to month is available; a twelve-month plan waives the $2,500 setup fee, which comes due on early cancellation. |
| Whether they know the board's rules | What does North Carolina require on a plumbing proposal? | The answer is the license number, under G.S. 87-21(e). An agency that has never read the statute will build you a quote form without a field for it. | We read the licensing article and the board's definitions before building a page, and the license number goes on every proposal template and permit request we touch. |
Verify every answer above against the agency's own materials, ours included. The statute is linked further down this page.
Four kinds of plumbing search, and what wins each
Plumbing demand in Charlotte arrives in four shapes, and a different asset wins each one. Most agencies build a single service page and bid on everything, which leaves the after-hours emergency to whoever answers first and the water-heater replacement to whoever the homeowner already knows. The table is the plan for all four.
| Demand type | What they search | What wins it | How fast it pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency, business hours | emergency plumber near me, burst pipe, no water | Local Services Ads with the Verified badge, a map pack listing with accurate hours, and a phone answered in under a minute | Immediately, for whoever answers first |
| Emergency, after hours | 24 hour plumber charlotte, water heater leaking, sewage backup | A dedicated emergency page that states the after-hours rate honestly, a line that is answered, and a text-back for the call that is missed | Immediately, and at the highest ticket of the week |
| Planned replacement | water heater replacement cost, tankless water heater charlotte, repipe cost | A service page with real price ranges, financing stated plainly, and a quote path that gets followed up on day three | Days to weeks, higher ticket, and the one your past-customer list already contains |
| Drain, sewer and research | why does my drain gurgle, sewer line repair vs replacement, slab leak signs | Diagnostic content that answers first and books second, with the camera inspection as the next step | Slowest, and the one AI assistants quote most |
The after-hours row is the one most agencies skip, because it is a staffing and software problem before it is an advertising one. It is also where a plumbing company's margin lives.
Plumbing books more of its calls than the other trades measured. Then the sun goes down.
Plumbing companies book a higher share of inbound calls than HVAC or electrical shops, and still lose most of the calls that matter. ServiceTitan's June 2022 platform data, from over 3,000 US and Canadian trade businesses, put plumbing at 43% of calls booked, the highest of the four trades reported. The rate collapses after 6 p.m., when plumbing emergencies arrive.
That collapse is the specific shape of this trade's problem. In that data, smaller shops booked about 26% of calls at their morning peak and about 9% after 6 p.m., roughly one evening call in eleven. Even the larger shops fell from about 61% to about 21% at night. A burst supply line does not wait for the office to open, and the homeowner holding a towel against it calls the next listing the moment the first one rings out.
Angie Snow, principal industry advisor at ServiceTitan, put the tradeoff plainly in that report: "if you get a good CSR, you don't have to spend as much in marketing because your booking rate's up and the calls are coming in." She was talking about the person who answers. The same logic applies to the system behind that person, which is what runs at 9 p.m. when nobody is there to answer at all.
An agency that sells you more leads is pouring them into a funnel that drops nine calls in ten at exactly the hour the highest-ticket work arrives. So that is where we start: what happens to the Sunday sewage backup, the Saturday form fill, the water-heater quote you sent Tuesday that nobody chased, and the customer from twelve years ago whose tank is now older than the one you replaced for them.
Five sourced facts that shape plumbing marketing in Charlotte
Every number below comes from a primary or named source with its date attached, and the Census figure carries an honest caveat about what the category bundles. Plumbing marketing content is full of precise-sounding statistics with no traceable origin; none of those appear here.
plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractor establishments in Mecklenburg County, employing 6,284 people. The Census bundles plumbing with HVAC in NAICS 238220, so this is the size of the combined field, not plumbing alone.
US Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023of inbound calls booked at plumbing companies, the highest of the four trades reported, and still fewer than half
ServiceTitan platform data, June 2022of calls booked after 6 p.m. at smaller shops, down from about 26% at the morning peak
ServiceTitan platform data, June 2022openings for plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters projected per year through 2035, the capacity ceiling behind every lead you buy
US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbooklife expectancy of a tankless water heater, which ENERGY STAR describes as much longer than any conventional tank-type unit. A conventional tank runs on a shorter clock, and every install date in your records is a replacement date in waiting.
ENERGY STAR, whole-home tankless gas water heatersA note on the Census number: NAICS 238220 is a single category covering plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, and the Census does not split it further at the county level. We would rather report the bundled figure with that caveat than invent a plumbing-only count that does not exist.
Marketing, and the systems that book what it brings in
Plumbing marketing that stops at the ad has paid for a phone call and nothing else. The second half of this list is what decides whether the first half was worth the money, and it is the half most agencies do not build.
Local Services Ads and the map pack
Where emergency plumbing demand lives. Google's own documentation lists responsiveness as a ranking input and says missed calls may negatively affect it, so the phone is an input to the ad, not a consequence of it.
The after-hours line
An emergency line that is answered, with the after-hours rate stated honestly on the page the caller came from, and anything that needs a plumber's judgment routed straight to the on-call tech.
Missed-call text-back
The call that came in while your plumber was under a sink gets a text back with a booking link before the homeowner has finished dialling the next listing.
Online booking against real capacity
A diagnostic or a drain clearing booked straight into a real slot, not a form that promises someone will call back. Replacement quotes route to a person.
Quote follow-up that happens on day three
Water-heater and repipe quotes chased on a schedule instead of when someone remembers. Unbooked calls revisited. Past customers re-engaged as their tanks age into replacement range.
Reviews at the invoice
The review ask wired into the tech's close-out, every customer, same milestone, no incentives. Review count and recency are both named in Google's Local Services profile-quality factors.
Reporting in booked jobs
Which channel produced the $6,000 tankless conversion and which produced the $150 drain call. Blended cost-per-lead hides that spread, and we will not report it to you.
How do Local Services Ads work for a Charlotte plumber?
Local Services Ads are the pay-per-lead placements above the map pack, and for a Charlotte plumbing company they are usually the most important paid channel because the emergency searcher taps the first listing that shows a phone number, a star rating and the Verified badge. Google's documentation calls the badge Google Verified today; many owners still call it Google Guaranteed.
The badge is earned through Google's screening. For the plumber category in the United States, Google's requirements page lists a business background check and an owner background check, business registration checks, general liability insurance, and a business license at the state level where local law requires one. Plumbing is flagged as an urgent category, which Google says carries an additional level of screening. The documents are yours to supply; the agency's job is to get them in before the season, because the review takes weeks, not days.
Ranking inside the unit is an auction weighted by profile quality and the likelihood of a lead. Google's help page lists your rating, number of reviews, average response time, use of high-quality images and completed verification checks under profile quality, and it says plainly that missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness. The shop that answers at 9 p.m. can outrank the shop that bids more. That is the whole reason the answering system is part of the marketing engagement rather than a separate purchase.
Google has been migrating Local Services Ads into Google Ads through Performance Max since August 2026, home services first. The ads stay keywordless and pay-per-lead, and Business Profile changes flow into the campaign, which makes the profile and the phone the two inputs that decide the channel. We set the account up, dispute leads that are not leads, and build the call handling the ranking depends on. We do not take a percentage of the spend.
What does the water-heater replacement cycle mean for plumbing marketing?
Water-heater replacement is the planned, high-ticket half of residential plumbing, and the demand a plumber can see coming. ENERGY STAR puts a tankless unit's life expectancy at about 20 years, much longer than any conventional tank-type heater. A conventional tank runs on a shorter clock, and that homeowner is on your list or somebody else's.
That makes the past-customer list a marketing channel with a predictable calendar. Every install date in your records is a future replacement date within a range, and a plumber who re-engages that customer in year nine with an honest note about tank age, a flush and inspection offer, and a stated price range for tank and tankless replacement is quoting before the search happens. The homeowner who searches water heater replacement cost at 7 a.m. on a Monday with a wet garage floor is comparing whoever answers first, which is a worse position to sell from.
North Carolina's plumbing board even has a license class for this one job. The State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors publishes a Limited Plumbing Water Heater Replacement Contractor classification covering the replacement of a water heater in a single-family detached dwelling in the same location, alongside the P-I and P-II classes that cover full potable water and drain-waste-vent systems. The pages we build name the class the company holds, because a homeowner comparing three quotes can check it on the board's license search in under a minute.
In Mecklenburg County, Code Enforcement requires separate permits for building, electrical, heating, air-conditioning and plumbing work, and the residential small-project exemption it publishes does not cover the addition or change in the design of a plumbing system. Whether a given water-heater job falls inside it is a question for the county, not for a marketing page. What the page should do is tell the homeowner that a licensed contractor pulls the permit, because that is a trust signal the unlicensed competitor cannot print.
Drain, sewer and the searcher who is not ready to call yet
Drain and sewer work produces the longest research cycle in plumbing, because a homeowner with a gurgling drain wants to know how bad it is before calling. The searches are questions: why does my drain gurgle, sewer repair or replacement, what a camera inspection costs. The page that answers first and asks for the booking second gets the booking.
This is also the content an AI assistant quotes. A diagnostic page that states the three likely causes of a recurring clog, says which one a homeowner can rule out themselves, and names the camera inspection as the honest next step gives a model something to cite and a reader something to trust. A page that says call the experts at the top and bottom and nothing in between gives neither.
Charlotte specifics belong on these pages because they are what a template cannot produce: what your crews actually find in the laterals of the neighbourhoods you work, which pipe materials turn up in which decades of housing, and what a camera inspection costs on your trucks. We write those pages with the plumber, not about the plumber, because the information gain is the diagnostic knowledge and that lives in the truck.
What the North Carolina plumbing board's rules mean for your marketing
North Carolina licenses plumbing contractors through the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors, and the statute has one requirement that lands directly on marketing material. G.S. 87-21(e) says the license shall be posted in the business location and its number shall appear on all proposals or contracts and requests for permits issued by municipalities.
A quote form that cannot carry a license number is a form that produces non-compliant proposals, so ours has the field. The classifications matter on the page too, because they define what a company may offer. The board's published definitions put a Plumbing Class I contractor on potable water and drain-waste-vent systems in any building, residential, commercial or industrial, and a Plumbing Class II contractor on the same systems in single-family detached dwellings only. A Restricted Limited Plumbing contractor covers exterior building sewer piping and exterior water service piping of two inches or less, among a short list. A P-II shop's website should not advertise commercial repipes, and we check the class before we write the services list.
The statute's list of places the number must appear covers proposals, contracts and permit requests. It does not name websites or digital advertising. Putting the license number in the site footer, on the Business Profile and in ad copy is therefore a trust decision rather than a compliance one, and we recommend it anyway, because a homeowner comparing three plumbers at midnight can verify a number on the board's public license search and cannot verify a slogan.
None of this is legal advice; your attorney and the board own those questions. The point is narrower: you can check whether we have read your trade's rules before you risk anything on us.
Scoped from the audit, with the floor stated up front
Mirastart's marketing engagements start at $3,000 per month, scoped from the audit rather than sold as a package, and we do not take a percentage of ad spend, so the fee does not grow with your budget. Month to month is available; a twelve-month plan waives the $2,500 setup fee, which comes due if the plan is cancelled early.
Local Services Ads and Google Ads spend is separate, paid to Google from your own account. Several of the firms ranking for this search in October 2026 publish no prices at all, and another publishes flat plan tiers sold identically to other trades and professions. Neither shape fits a trade whose jobs range from a $150 drain call to a five-figure sewer replacement. The scope has to come from your call log and your ticket spread, which is what the audit reads.
Built in Charlotte, running for Charlotte home-service businesses
The systems a plumbing company leaks revenue through are live and clickable, not theoretical. The website for Carolina Sky Painting, a Charlotte home-services contractor, is ours, built to load fast, get found and turn a visit into a quote request. The booking and repair-status software Quick Auto NC runs its bays on is ours too.
That software solves the same problem a plumber has: a job booked against real capacity, with the customer told what is happening without having to call. The booking system behind this site's own discovery-call page calculates real availability and confirms automatically. The operations platform Mirastart runs its own invoicing and client portal on replaced somebody's spreadsheet. Those are the exact mechanics a plumbing shop needs: an inquiry answered in seconds, an emergency routed to the on-call tech, a water-heater quote chased on day three, a past customer re-engaged in year nine.
We would rather show you those systems working on a call than assemble a logo wall. Every number on this page comes from a named source, and every claim about Mirastart's own results is published when it exists, with the numbers, never before.
Plumbing marketing, answered straight.
What makes marketing a plumbing company different from marketing any other business?
The revenue moment is a phone answered at the wrong hour. Plumbing books a higher share of its calls than the other trades in ServiceTitan's June 2022 data, 43%, and then falls to about 9% after 6 p.m. at small shops, which is when the burst pipe and the sewage backup call. The economics are also lopsided: a drain clearing and a repipe differ by two orders of magnitude, so a blended cost-per-lead number is worse than useless for deciding where to spend.
Do you run Local Services Ads for plumbers, and what does Google check?
Yes. For the plumber category in the United States, Google's screening page lists a business and owner background check, business registration checks, general liability insurance, and a state-level business license where local law requires one, with additional screening because plumbing is an urgent category. We submit the documents, run the ads, dispute leads that are not leads, and build the call handling that Google's own ranking documentation says responsiveness depends on. Nobody can guarantee a position.
Can you fix after-hours missed calls, or is that a staffing problem?
It is a timing problem wearing a staffing costume. An emergency call needs an answer in under a minute at 9 p.m., and a water-heater quote needs a follow-up on day three whether or not that week was chaos. People are good at judgment and bad at clocks. We build the missed-call text-back, the answered emergency line and the follow-up sequence that keep the clock, and leave your people the conversations that need a plumber.
What plumbing and home-services work can we look at before we call?
Real, clickable systems rather than a logo wall: the website for Carolina Sky Painting, a Charlotte home-services contractor; the online booking and repair-status software Quick Auto NC runs on; and the live-availability booking system behind this site. Every one of those runs the missed-call, booking and follow-up mechanics a plumbing shop leaks revenue through, and you can see them working on the first call.
Does North Carolina require my plumbing license number in my advertising?
The statute, G.S. 87-21(e), requires the license to be posted at your business location and the number to appear on all proposals or contracts and requests for permits issued by municipalities. It does not name websites or digital ads. We still recommend the number in the footer, on the Business Profile and in ad copy, because a homeowner can verify it on the board's public license search and cannot verify a slogan. This is not legal advice; the board and your attorney own the question.
Do you understand the difference between a P-I and a P-II license?
Yes, and we check it before writing a services list. The board's published definitions put a Class I contractor on potable water and drain-waste-vent systems in any building and a Class II contractor on the same systems in single-family detached dwellings only, with a Restricted Limited class for exterior sewer and small water service piping and a separate class for same-location water-heater replacement in a single-family home. A website that advertises work outside the class the company holds is a problem we would rather catch than cause.
Which parts of the Charlotte metro do you cover?
Charlotte and the metro around it: Huntersville, Cornelius and the Lake Norman towns, Concord, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Gastonia, and Fort Mill and Rock Hill across the state line, the same service area most Charlotte plumbing companies run trucks in. The work is delivered remotely for anyone further out.
What does plumbing marketing cost?
Every engagement is scoped around the problem rather than sold as a package, so the number depends on what the work turns out to involve. It starts with a free conversation, and you get a scope and a price before anything is committed.
