A Plumber's Google Business Profile, Field by Field: Categories, Hours, Service Area and the Review Ask

Perry Lam · FounderPublished

A plumber's Google Business Profile is the listing that puts a plumbing company in the map results and the Local Services unit, and for a company that works at customers' addresses it is built differently from a shop's: primary category Plumber, address hidden, a drawn service area, hours that match who answers, and a services list in the homeowner's words.

Most guides to the profile are written for a storefront. A Charlotte plumbing company runs trucks out of a yard or a house, takes its biggest calls after 6 p.m., and sells water heaters and drains by name. Each fact changes a field, and Google's pages say how, as of November 2026.

Which category does a plumber choose, and which secondary ones matter?

The primary category is Plumber, and Google says the categories you select affect your local ranking. Additional categories describe real departments, not every service: Google's instruction is to use a few from its list rather than one per product or service. For most plumbing companies that means water heater and drain work, if those are lines you run.

Google's guidelines add the discipline: choose the fewest categories it takes to describe the core business.

How does a plumbing company with no storefront set the address?

A plumbing company that serves customers at their homes is a service-area business, and Google says it should hide its address and list a service area instead. The guidelines use the trade by name: "if you're a plumber and run your business from your residential address, clear the address from your Business Profile." The address stays on file for verification.

The service area is the towns you actually dispatch to, and Google says its boundary should not extend much beyond about two hours of driving time from the base, with room for larger areas where appropriate. One profile covers one central office; a second is allowed only for a second location with its own service area and staff. A virtual office does not qualify unless staffed.

What goes in the services list, and how is a water heater listed?

The services list is where a plumber names the work in the words a homeowner types, and Google's help page uses plumbing as its example: options such as install faucet or repair toilet, plus custom services, grouped, with descriptions and prices. When a customer searches for a listed service, Google says it may be highlighted on your profile.

Water heaters deserve their own group: tank replacement, tankless installation, repair, and a flush and inspection, each with a one-line description of what the visit includes. Drains get the same: clearing, camera inspection, sewer repair. Two rules from Google's page: a custom service name may not contain a price or a phone number, and a name that violates policy is rejected automatically. The price goes in the price field.

How should a 24-hour plumber set hours, including holidays?

Hours are set to when a human will answer, and the 24-hour option is for a company that genuinely dispatches at 2 a.m. Google's editor offers Open with main hours and a per-day 24 hours setting. Holiday closures go in special hours, which need main hours set and cover a brief change or a closure of up to six days.

Unless the on-call rotation is real, two things argue against the 24-hour setting. BrightLocal's December 2023 study of 50 locations found that service-area businesses set to open 24 hours did not appear to see ranking fluctuations and that the setting did not seem to produce higher local rankings, and it advises against hours that are not true and accurate. Google's ranking page says complete and accurate information makes a profile more likely to show. There is no emergency hours field; the after-hours promise belongs in the services list and description, and the phone has to keep it.

Which photos and which booking link belong on a plumbing profile?

Photos are the proof a plumbing company controls on its own profile: trucks with the name on them, crews at the door, a finished tankless install. Google asks for a JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB, 720 by 720 pixels recommended, in focus and well lit, no heavy filters.

The booking field has two forms. Whitespark's January 2026 guide describes an appointments link, whose availability depends on category, and a Booking button powered by Reserve with Google, open to Local Services among other verticals through an integrated provider. Either way, the link should land on a real slot for a diagnostic or drain clearing, not a form promising a call back.

What happened to Q&A, and where does the review ask go?

The public questions-and-answers section is gone from the front of the profile. Search Engine Roundtable reported on December 15, 2025 that Google confirmed it was removing the Q&A feature in Maps in favour of an AI-powered Ask button, with businesses able to answer existing questions only. As of November 2026, the services list, the description, the reviews and the website answer the homeowner's question.

That makes reviews the field that moves. Google names review count and positive ratings among the inputs to prominence, one of its three ranking factors, and says the ask can be a link or QR code. One contributor to Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search experts wrote that rating and review count matter, but that review recency seems to be a significant factor for their clients. Recency comes from a uniform ask at the invoice, every customer, in the technician's close-out.

Two lines not to cross: Google treats incentives for reviews as fake and misleading content, and the FTC's rule at 16 CFR Part 465 bars paying for reviews conditioned on sentiment. Ask everyone, incentivise nobody, reply to all.

What this looks like when it runs

What happens to a call nobody answers is the first question a plumbing company should ask of its own profile, because the profile's job ends when the phone rings. Running, a missed call gets a text back within seconds with a booking link, an emergency routes to the on-call tech, and the link offers slots from real capacity.

Mirastart builds and runs those systems for Charlotte home-service businesses. The websites for Lightning Power Electric and Carolina Sky Painting are ours; so is the booking and repair-status software Quick Auto NC runs its bays on, and the booking system behind this site's discovery-call page, which calculates genuine availability and confirms automatically. The profile stays in the plumbing company's name, and because Google requires a verified profile before Local Services Ads run, it is week one's work.

Questions

Plumber Google business profile, answered.

Should a plumbing company show its address on Google if it works out of the owner's house?

No. Google's guidelines say a service-area business should hide its address, and they use this exact case as the example: a plumber running the business from a residential address should clear it from the profile. The address still has to be one Google can find, because verification depends on it, but it is not displayed. Customers see the service area instead.

Can a plumber set the profile to open 24 hours for emergency calls?

Only if someone genuinely answers and dispatches around the clock. Google allows a 24 hours setting per day, but BrightLocal's December 2023 study found the setting did not seem to produce higher local rankings for service-area businesses, and it advises against hours that are not true and accurate. State the after-hours promise in the services list and description instead, and make the phone keep it.

Does adding more categories or services make a plumber rank higher?

Google says the categories you select affect local ranking, and also to use a few that describe the business rather than one per service, the fewest it takes to describe the core business. Services are different: Google says a listed service may be highlighted when a customer searches for it, not that the list ranks you. List what you sell and stop.
